The Dutch Twaalfvoetsjollenclub has three regions: North, West and Loosdrecht. All regattas are regional regatta's, nobody likes to travel a lot. There are four exceptions, these are the national class events where every Dutch dinghy sailor should be:

1. Kaag, Kagerplassen 18-20 May, class event of the region West
2. GWS, Pikmeer 14-15 september, class event of the region North
3. Houtskoolcup, Loosdrechtse plassen, 5-6 october, class event of the region Loosdrecht
4. Dutch open championship, Loosdrechtse plassen, 26-28 July 2013,

If you are a foreigner and you want to participate, you need:

• a wooden dinghy with a Dutch measurement certificate
• a membership of a Dutch sailing club
• a starting license of the Dutch watersportverbond
• membership of the Twaalfvoetsjollenclub is not mandatory

Total costs of measurement certificate, starting license and membership of a dutch sailing club, about 100 euro per year. Sent an email and we will help you with the administration.
Kaag is the international dinghy event of the Netherlands. The Watersportverbond has given a dispensation: dinghy sailors from other countries with a classic wooden dinghy and a measurement certificate of their national authority are allowed to participate. Three loan boats are available.

De beste mast gaffel giek

Weleens in een vliegtuig gezeten en last gehad van turbulentie. Als je dan naar de vleugels kijkt zie je ze bewegen net als een vogel. Een zeilboot en een vliegtuig zijn aan dezelfde wetten van de aerodynamica onderworpen. Dat betekent dus dat een stijve mast en een flexibele gaffel overeenkomen met een vliegtuigvleugel. Tijdens het Nederlands kampioenschap 12voetsjol 2012 had ik een erg stijve, maar ook zware massieve mast: 8,2 kg. Met windkracht 7 ideaal. Een holle mast is 4,5 kg maar twee keer zo duur. In Italië toegestaan,maar als je een klasse kapot wilt maken, moet je alles wat modern en kostbaar is toestaan. Maar dat is een ander verhaal en weer een onderwerp voor een volgend artikel in 12footnews.
Terug naar de mast. Een stijve mast is dus het uitgangspunt. Bij zachte wind kan een iets dunnere mast ook, maar bij harde wind is een stijve zware mast aan te bevelen. Dat geldt niet voor de gaffel, een flexibele is het mooist, vooral op golven en als het eigen gewicht van de bemanning laag is. Met een flexibele gaffel en een vlak zeil kun je de boot gemakkelijker recht houden.
En dan nu de giek. Aan de wind is een stijve giek volgens mij beter. Voor de wind een flexibele, want je krijgt hetzelfde effect als bij een vliegtuigvleugel. Het zeil beweegt als een trampoline. Er is 1 probleem, als de giek te flexibel is, gaat het grootzeil torderen, je krijgt hem niet meer vlak, door de neerhaler aan te trekken. Het resultaat is alleen dat de giek nog meer als een hoepel gaat staan. Dat is gevaarlijk, want de jol begint dan snel te rollen, waardoor je maar zo kunt omslaan. Het advies: met harde wind een redelijk stijve giek. Bij zachte wind een meer flexibele.
In mijn garage heb ik een aantal masten, gieken en gaffels gemaakt. Valt best mee. Koop wat vurenhout. Lijm de stukken aan elkaar met constructielijm. Maak de mast, gaffel of giek vierkant, daarna 8 hoekig en tenslotte 16 hoekig. Daarna schuren en lakken. In het midden geldt een maximale dikte voor de rondhouten, maar geen minimale. Hierdoor kun je flexibele rondhouten maken. Beslag kun je on-line kopen bij toplicht.de. Leuke winterklusjes.

West Kirby

The centennial event for classic wooden dinghies is one of the four friendship regattas and will be organized in England at West Kirby: Friday 28, Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 June 2013. A holy place, 100 years ago the birth place of the first 12foot dinghies, designed by George Cockshott. See for more information West Kirby website
At the moment in England are about 10 classic wooden dinghies according to the Dutch rules. This winter some second hand dinghies are bought in the Netherlands, the old ones are restored and the Lithuanian boatbuilder amber boat has found a dealer in England. Also a new 12footdinghy is built by goodwood boat company with number GBR050. Dinghy owners from Ireland, England, France, Germany, Lithuania, Belgium, Swiss, Canada and the Netherlands has plans to participate. The Dutch delegation is the biggest one, at the moment 16 teams have plans to visit West Kirby. A reservation has been made for a hotel. All classic wooden dinghy lovers stay together and there is still plenty of room. Sent an email to Pieter or Steve for more information about an historic and amusing event. AICD and Twaalfvoetsjollenclub

Italy has chosen for modern dinghies. The Netherlands for classic dinghies. Despite the differences in vision how to develop the dinghy class in the future it would be a pity if the contacts between Italian and Dutch dinghy sailors are over now. Francesca Lodigiani is the president of the Italian class organisation AICD and has written an invitation to the Dutch committee of the Twaalfvoetsjollenclub.
